National Accountability Bureau, Sindh has started investigations against high jail officials, including IG Prisons of Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur and other Sindh jails. The investigations are being carried out against them on alleged charges of their involvement in serious of fences committed in development works, purchase of various items, provision of undue facilities to prisoners against heavy bribe and prisoner's illegal shifting to hospitals for treatment.
According to NAB Sindh sources, certain record of Central Jail Karachi, Hyderabad and Sukkur has been taken into custody. The sources said that after the establishment of NAB Regional offices at Hyderabad and Sukkur, NAB Sindh has speedily started registration of cases against corruption and bribery.
Investigations have also been started against jail officials providing luxuries to inmates of jails in Karachi, Hyderabad and other Sindh cities.
The sources said that NAB Sindh had received complaints from a number of citizens against former and certain present high officials of jails in the province.
According to their complaints heavy bribe used to be obtained from politicians, bureaucrats, businessmen and other influential prisoners interned in various jails for providing them undue facilities inside. However, those who would not pay, are given animal like treatment.
It may be mentioned here that there are 15 jails in Sindh including Central Jail Karachi, Women Jail Karachi, Landhi Jail Karachi, Central Jail Hyderabad, District Jails Hyderabad, Nawabshah, Mirpurkhas, Dadu, Sukkur, Jacobabad and Sanghar and Central Jails Sukkur and Khairpur.
Official sources said that a wing of NAB Sindh to inquire into the above stated complaints and initial investigation has revealed that doctors and high officials of jails, after taking heavy bribe, would show the prisoners sick and issue them medical letter on the basis of the prisoners would get permission from courts for admission in hospitals.
Meanwhile, NAB Sindh has started collecting details of assets of former and present officials of Sindh jails.
