Sindh Women Development Minister Dr Saeeda Malik, said women need social empowerment to live with dignity in the society. She said domestic violence is an international phenomenon, adding women living in distress are them selves responsible of this situation. She was speaking in a concluded session of three-day workshop on "Domestic violence" held under the aegis of the Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) here on Wednesday.
Media persons from different districts of the province attended the event.
The minister said violence against women is on rise internationally and in Pakistan crime is reported more in low-income areas.
She lauded the media efforts in highlighting the issues related to crime and domestic violence and said we get information through the media.
She also appreciated the PPF efforts, which is providing skill training to the newcomers in the field of journalism.
"Women are now well equipped to tackle the issues but still there is a need to strengthen social campaign in urban as well as in rural areas to educate the womenfolk," she emphasised.
Saeeda said, it was first time that honour killing had been accepted as a crime. There is also a need of necessary amendment in the law to curb crime against women, she added.
The minister said a woman complaint centre has been established in Sindh Secretariat building, where a social worker, a lawyer and also an ASI have been deputed to support the victims as woman is a shy person that feels hesitation to register complaint against criminals.
Fazal Qureishi, Chairman PPF highlighted the foundation's aims and objectives.
He said this is the first of seventh workshops on women issues being held in seven districts of the province.
He said the Pakistan Press Foundation has been engaged in providing skill training to young and newcomers in the field of journalism. He said only 5 percent of professional women have been in this field.
