Ukraine plans to sign a deal to supply 300,000 tonnes of grain to Libya late this year, Oleksander Zynchenko, Ukraine's State Secretary, was quoted as saying on Monday. Zynchenko, who is visiting Libya, said the deal was likely to be signed this week or next, Interfax Ukraine news agency reported from Tripoli. He gave no further details. Zynchenko also said Libya and Ukraine planned to set up a join venture which would plant wheat in Ukraine for Libyan needs.
"We have discussed setting up a joint firm which would plant grain for Libya," Zynchenko told reporters after meeting Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.
Zynchenko said a new firm could plant grain covering an area of about 250,000 hectares.
Last month, a senior Ukrainian farm ministry delegation visited Libya and agreed that Ukraine could export about 300,000 tonnes of wheat and barley to Tripoli.
Libya also proposed discussing a long-term import agreement under which it would be granted preferential terms. Libya is a long-standing importer of Ukrainian grain and grain products.
Ukraine has so far exported 200,800 tonnes of barley, 21,000 tonnes of wheat and 15,340 tonnes of maize to Libya in the 2004/05 (July-June) season.
