Advisor to the Prime Minister on Finance and Revenue Salman Shah on Monday said the government was fully aware of its responsibilities toward social sector and doing its best to reduce poverty. He told participants of the Pakistan Development Forum (PDF) 2005 that the government was taking a number of steps to ensure uplift of downtrodden people. He mentioned increase in annual budgetary allocation for health, education, road to market in rural areas, building up of major industrial zones, chanalisation of water resources and facilitation of farming community for increase in agricultural production.
Dr Salman Shah added that the government was following the Prime Minister's vision for eradication of poverty from rural areas. The vision urged for social justice, diversion of funds for low-income areas to support the people living in less developed areas.
He said the government was also facilitating the private sector, which was the real engine to drive recent growth and development forward. He said Pakistan has done great development in all sectors of economy during the last few years but conceded that it needs much more to make significant progress in social sector.
The advisor added that Pakistan's reforms programme was playing a key role in its progress and it would help Islamabad get sustainable development.
State Minister for Finance Omar Ayub Khan said the government was focusing on social sector development. He said the entire PRSP was people-centric and it would help Pakistan achieve millennium development goals (MDGs).
He said Islamabad was making all possible efforts to translate benefit of recent growth to the common man. He said the government was targeting high growth rate for the next fiscal year.
