Police torture on women and journalists on the eve of PPP leader Asif Ali Zardari's reception was the worst example of subversion of human rights and a report in this regard has been sent to international organisations. Human Rights Council Pakistan (HRCP) Chairman Mumtaz Ahmad Tarar expressed these views while addressing a press conference here on Thursday. He said that the police action against journalists has exposed the government's tall claims regarding press freedom.
"The report regarding human right violation on the occasion of Asif Ali Zardari arrival in the provincial metropolis has been sent to various organisation, including Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, European Union, Commonwealth and American State Department," he added.
According to him, the government has adopted a dual policy. On the one hand it talks about reconciliation with the opposition parties and allowing political activities, and on the other hand it arrests political workers.
President Musharraf should take note of the situation, particularly mishandling of 70 senior journalists, who arrived along with Asif Zardari from Dubai.
The incident was against the norm of democracy. All political parties should have equal opportunity to express their opinion and freely move within the country.
