Executive Director of Parliamentarians Commission on Human Rights MNA Kashmala Tariq held a meeting with an official of the London-based human rights watchdog Amnesty International (AI) here late Friday and briefed her women issues in Pakistan. Kashmala Tariq who is very active in promoting rights of women in the country was here after attending a four-day meeting on a human rights conference in Geneva. Talking to APP Kashmala said during her meeting with an official of South Asian Desk at the AI Angelika Pathak, she gave Pathak an up-date on efforts being made by her and the government to protect women rights.
The focus of her meeting was issues like domestic violence, honour killing, juvenile crime and Hadood ordinance. AI assured her of its support in protection of women rights in Pakistan because it wanted women should have same rights there as were enjoyed by them in the developed world.
According to her AI expressed its readiness to work in collaboration with Pakistan in ensuring protection of women human rights. The case of Mukhtaran Mai also figured during her meeting and she told Pathak that Supreme Court of Pakistan was seized of the matter and would begin its hearing soon.
Kashmala said she was committed to strive for protection of women rights, adding she was already working to move requisite amendments in family laws to realise this objective.
She had been very vocal in the National Assembly in raising issues concerning women rights and her endeavours were appreciated by her colleagues.
