Sindh Governor, Dr Ishratul Ibad has directed to formulate a comprehensive plan to check marine pollution. Presiding over a meeting at Governor House to review the increasing pollution in coastal areas here on Saturday, he said that there was no co-ordination among marine affairs' departments and agencies hence there was no co-ordinated system to keep coastal areas tidy and clean. He ordered formation of a committee, led by Additional Chief Secretary Local Bodies to chalk out a co-ordinated plan in next 15 days.
The city government would be made bound to implement this plan in collaboration with the stakeholders, governor said. Dr Ibad said the proposed plan must primarily focus on the solution to the issue of sewerage water discharge and garbage throwing into the sea. Ships and boats sailing in the area should be warned not to spread marine pollution.
Government was mulling over to set up five treatment plants in the city. 75 percent cost of these plants would be borne by the government, while the stakeholders to bear the rest, he told the meeting.
Governor considered end to marine from pollution as the need of the hour adding sea was not only a recreational place, but also an important sector of the national economy.
He also ordered to take safety measures for the beach-goers along with an awareness-raising campaign, besides alerting sea-divers, lifeguards and other related beach security officials.
