Vietnam is likely to supply the bulk of 200,000 tonnes of rice the Philippines will be importing for June/July delivery, data from state trading firm National Food Authority (NFA) showed on Wednesday. The NFA held a tender for 5-percent and 15-percent broken rice variety on Wednesday but said it would announce its decision on the offers in five days. State trading agency Vietnam Southern Food Corp submitted the lowest bid, offering to deliver 50,000 tonnes of 5-percent broken rice at $303.20 per tonne, including cost and freight.
Eight other Vietnamese suppliers offered similar bids of $303.50 per tonne, including cost and freight, for the 5-percent broken rice. Vietnam Southern Food and the eight other Vietnamese suppliers also offered to deliver 15-percent broken rice at $295.20 per tonne.
Pakistan supplier Peter Creamer offered to supply 15,000 tonnes each of 5-percent and 15-percent broken rice at $304.88 per tonne and $289.88 per tonne.
The Philippines needs to import between 1.1 million and 1.6 million tonnes of rice this year to meet expected demand, with rice harvests likely to be hit by the El Nino drought phenomenon and delays in plantings.
