The provincial irrigation department has released the Manchhar Lake water into Indus River upstream of Kotri Barrage, despite strong protest by the socio-political organisations. It may be mentioned here that last year release of water into River Indus upstream of Kotri Barrage had taken a toll of 50 lives. The District Co-ordination Officer, who is also the Chairman of the Permanent Committee on Emergency Response Action For Resolution of Drinking Water Problem & Health Crises in Hyderabad, has directed the HDA management and District Health Department to collect at least 10 samples of drinking water from different parts of water supply system of the city twice a day for laboratory tests so that any contamination could be detected and resolved.
He also directed that this practice should be started with immediate effect so that the standard of water could be monitored and compared with the water quality of the coming days.
The DCO has referred to the decision adopted in the first meeting, according to which all the expenditures incurred on this practice would be borne by District Government Hyderabad. He also directed management of the HDA to make arrangements in advance for providing required treatment in case any contamination is detected in the system.
The DCO also stressed for launching awareness campaign to educate the people for adopting pre-cautionary measures, especially during hot season.
Meanwhile, a survey has revealed that during the past week two fetal gastro-enteritis cases have been reported while 304 gastro victims were hospitalised in Civil, Bhittai and Memon Hospitals, while the number of gastro patients in private clinics was reported to be much higher.
