A Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) team of engineers late Thursday night unearthed power theft worth Rs 3.5 million at an ice factory and a petrol pump during inspection, a KESC spokesman said on Friday. The spokesman said as and when, the consumers with higher connected load reflected sudden drop in consumption, the special team of engineers carry out a thorough check of their metres, connection cables and enquire the reasons for sudden drop in load consumption. Since last month, Paracha Ice Factory, located at Shah Faisal Colony, was under constant monitoring of the KESC team. The factory had a production capacity up to 600 ice blocks per day, but the metre reading was not reflecting the real power load consumption.
The spokesman said on Thursday night the utility team visited the ice factory for inspection and discovered an innovative method, not known previously, for getting illegal electricity.
The connecting cables of all the three phases were length-wise pierced at the centre and another concealed wire was connected to a hidden switch for stopping CT-operated metre from recording the actual power consumption so the metre was recording 50 percent less electricity usage at the ice factory.
Similarly, the team inspected the Faridi Service Station at Garden Road, a disconnected commercial consumer with a defaulting amount of Rs 3 million, and found direct use of electricity bypassing the metres.
The power utility also lodges two separate FIRs against the owners of the ice factory and petrol pump and efforts are being made to arrest them for further legal action.
