City Nazim, Naimatullah Khan has stressed the need for installation of more desalination plants in the coastal areas of Karachi so as to meet with the water requirements of city's ever growing population. He said the local and foreign companies interested in the installation of such plants on BOT basis would be extended all possible facilities. He stated this while reviewing the offer from a Danish company for desalination and power plants at a meeting at Civic Center here on Friday.
Pointing out that City Government has already entered into an agreement with an American company for setting up a desalination plant, City Nazim said that more such agreements will be concluded.
The meeting was also attended by President of NORDICOM, a Provital International Consortium, Shakeel Naimat, Managing Director KWSB Brigadier Iftekhar Hyder, Deputy Managing Director Shahid Saleem, Advisor to City Nazim Ansar Razi and other officials.
With the help of multi-media, the meeting was briefed about models and details of desalination plants installed in Denmark, Saudi Arabia and Mexico.
President NORDICOM International Shakeel Naimat informed the meeting about a survey carried out in Pipri, Dhabeji and other coastal areas with regard to desalination plant project and said similar survey of Hawksbay and other locations will be conducted next week.
He said a desalination plant can be installed in 10 months having a capacity to desalinate 64 mgd sea water into sweet water besides power generation.
Naimatullah Khan said that offer of companies selling desalinated water at appropriate price would be duly considered.
It is the utmost effort of City Government to have desalination plants on BOT basis, not only to supply drinking water at lesser cost but also to produce electricity.
In this regard the City Government is examining various projects of desalinating sea water into sweet water.
He said while K-3 project is under implementation, City Government has started planning for K-4 project.
The Managing Director KWSB Brigadier Iftekhar briefed the meeting about details regarding Pipri, COD and Dhabeji plants.
