The managing committee of Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS), NWFP in its meeting on Thursday at Peshawar has underscored the need for promotion and development of fast fading human values in the society and stressed the widening and strengthening of scope of its humanitarian activities on district levels. The meeting presided over by Dr Sher Muhammad Khan, provincial chairman of the society informed that ambulance services had been launched on limited scale which would later on extended to other parts of the province after eliciting its response.
One diagnostic centre has also been established at the society's office in Dabgari Gardens fully equipped to conduct all sorts of pathological tests on subsidised rates, the chairman divulged.
The members were also apprised of the colossal relief assistance provided by the provincial branch of PRCS to the tsunami victims as well as to hapless people effected by recent heavy rains and snowfall in Mansehra and Swat areas.
The committee also discussed threadbare the affairs of the only paraplegic hospital at Hayatabad which is confronting serious financial crisis and vetted proposals to retrieve the centre to its fully operational status. The members expressed their gratitude to the provincial health minister for his commitment to allocate finances for the revival of the hospital, which was initially established by the ICRC for the Afghan war victims. The minister has also constituted a board of governors under his own chairmanship with Dr Sher Muhammad Khan as its vice-chairman.
The suggestions put forth by Dr Runina Gilani and Dr Yasmeen Ashfaq aimed at involving students of highs school, colleges and universities in the humanitarian tasks of the society as an instrument for mass awareness was supported by director education (schools) who promised to take up the matter with provincial authorities.
The most important point on the agenda was disaster preparedness and management, an issue, which has recently gained elephantine importance in view of the disastrous global environmental phenomenon.
The committee invited suggestions for compilation of society's five years strategic plan and also constituted three teams tasked with strengthening the PRCS in different districts. The teams include Professor Dr Qasim Jan, Dr Rubina Gilani, Sanaullah Khan Gandapur for South, Professor Dr Mehr Taj Roghani, Khalid Sultan Khawaja, Muhammad Ayub and Colonel K.A. Rashid (Retd) for Peshawar and Dr Sher Muhammad Khan, Colonel, Amin Nawaz (Retd) & Professor Qasim Jan for Malakand.
At the conclusion of the meeting Dr Sher Muhammad Khan made a fervent appeal to all the philanthropists, civil social bodies and affluent of the country to come out with generous largesse to help the society in executing its humanitarian obligations. Earlier, Asif Amin, Provincial Programme Officer and Dr Maheen Qazalbash gave a brief representation on the activities of the society.
