Speakers at a memorial meeting held at Karachi Press Club on Saturday paid tributes to late Baseer Ashraf, a journalist of immense repute, prolific artist and art critic. The meeting was organised by Tapal Tea. Aftab Tapal, Salim Asmi, Professor Sehar Ansari, Arshad Nawab, Sabiha Ashraf, widow of Baseer Ashraf, Nina, daughter, and others spoke on the occasion. They said that Baseer Ashraf was a man full of ideas and served a lot in the field of media and advertising.
"A man of many great talents, Baseer was a creative person and also took the brush in the later half of his life. Always an innovator, he introduced computer graphic technology in his paintings," they observed.
Professor Sehar Ansari suggested to collect all his Urdu and English writings and paintings, and to publish all in one volume.
Aftab Tapal, agreeing with the idea, said that Tapal Tea would sponsor publication of such a book. He said that Baseer Ashraf was a committed person with talent of creativity, and the work produced by him has long-lasting effect and would be remembered for a long time.
Nina said that Ashraf was not just her 'aboo'. He was her hero and her guiding light. "What I remember most about him is that he never entertained, never acknowledged any boundaries, any restrictions to thinking", she added.
She said that her father was brilliant, eccentric, totally unconventional, extraordinarily creative, witty, childlike in his curiosity and love of learning.
A large number of journalists, Baseer Ashraf's friends and relatives attended the meeting.
