Fourteen South African fishermen are missing after their trawler was run down by a refrigeration cargo ship off the Eastern Cape, leaving only two survivors, an official said on Monday. A torrent of water swept skipper Paul Landers from the wheelhouse through the trawler's corridors before throwing him out and up to the surface, National Sea Rescue Institute spokesman Craig Lambinon said. "The missing guys were all apparently sleeping up forward," he said. "The vessel sank 20 seconds after impact. They were apparently just weighing anchor when they were struck."
After the collision with the "Lindsey" some 11 miles (17 km) off the Eastern Cape early on Sunday, the 178-metre "Ouro do Brasil" rescued one survivor - a crewman swept from the trawler's deck - and searched for more before heading into Port Elizabeth for repairs, he said.
