The Ministry of Textile has been allocated about 700 acres of land for the proposed "Textile City on soft terms to set up industrial units, the Senate Standing Committee on Ports and Shipping was informed in a meeting held at Port Qasim Authority secretariat with Senator Mrs Gulshan Saeed in the chair. The meeting was attended by Senators Mohammad Akram, Mohammad Amin Dadabhoy, Tahir Iqbal, Liaquat A Banglzai, Dr Abdullah Riaz, Mrs Saadia Abbasi, besides the PQA Chairman, Rear Admiral Saleem Ahmed Meenai, officials of PQA and acting secretary Ports and Shipping S.M Hassan Zaidi.
The meeting was informed that some 8000 jobs would be generated in the Textile City. The committee was told that 400-acre had been allotted to Al-Watan Industrial Zone for Overseas Pakistanis to establish small industrial units.
A media city would also be established at Port Qasim to highlight economic and commercial activities. Other projects include LPG Terminal costing $25 million, Liquid Cargo Terminal $11.4 million and second container terminal costing $211 million, second oil jetty $20 million and other projects that would create jobs for thousands of unemployed people and help in poverty alleviation.
The committee was briefed about existing port facilities and future requirements, port operation, performance of Port Qasim Authority, Shipping Intelligence and security arrangements at Port Qasim, on-going industrial and commercial projects and other related matters.
