Sindh Assembly Acting Speaker Raheela Tiwana, talking to newsmen after the prorogation of the Assembly session on Tuesday, said that she had received threatening calls to blow up the assembly, which prompted her to immediately prorogue the session sine die. She said that the opposition had made it a point to protest on all issues, even on security measures. She said that she had received two to three threatening calls to "cancel assembly proceedings", else it would be blown up.
Raheela said that she had informed the concerned quarters about this threat and only after their assurance to take "such action as you think fit" she decided to save all members of the assembly.
She said that the best way to provide protection to the members was to prorogue the session so that the members could go to their homes. While she was talking to newsmen, all members of the opposition, who had stayed on the floor of the house for about 15 minutes after the prorogation, came to her chamber.
They said that the prorogation because of the fear of acts of terrorism had exposed the Sindh government. Law and order had crumbled and the provincial government had no right to remain in power. "They should resign and go back if they are unable to provide security to the people of this province. Even the members are not safe. How ironical it is!" said Nisar Khuhro. Nasrullah Shaijh said that the Governor and the MPAs of the MQM were responsible for the recent killings in the city.
He said, "They are the killers. Governor Ishratul Ibad Khan, Altaf Hussein and MPAs of MQM are involved in crimes and we would have to deal with them. They are the killers of Aslam Mujahid."
Nisar, Murad Ali Shah, Qaim Ali Shah and others condemned Raheela on her face and said that they would move a no-confidence motion against her, as she had become a party and had aligned herself with the treasury benches. They said that she was hostage in the hands of MQM and had lost her value in the eyes of the opposition.
They said that the prorogation order was read out under pressure from the governor and Sindh Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim himself was a weak man.
Tiwana did not respond to the charges and said that she would continue to protect the assembly and its members.
She said that it was a wrong impression that she was under the influence of any political party.
