The business community engaged in the sports goods industry has urged federal government to take drastic steps for up-gradation of the industry enabling it to cope with the requirements of changing trends in the global market. The sports goods industry of Sialkot is totally export-oriented, manufacturing and supplying soccer balls, hockey sticks, cricket bats and gear, martial arts uniform etc to all international brands.
However, the industry needs full support of the government especially for its up-gradation in order to fulfil global requirements and compete in the market.
Presently, the soccer ball industry is facing a big test to successfully encounter the changes posed by the introduction of mechanised ball called "Roterio Ball" which has already been played in European Championship 2004. Under the circumstances, the sports industry was direly needed financial and technical support of the government to effectively face this ominous challenge.
Various exporters and manufacturers of sports goods pinpointed other areas like technical training, forceful marketing techniques in which government can be instrumental for uplift of sports goods industry. The capacity building and up-gradation of the industry is a continuous exercise but there are circumstances where total change of machinery and production process is required which the industry cannot afford alone, they added.
Expressing hope, they said the federal government would surely allocate sufficient funds in forthcoming budget for modernisation of the sports goods industry.
