Former foreign minister and veteran Muslim Leaguer, Gohar Ayub Khan on Friday urged the Indian leadership to take steps for the improvement of human rights conditions in Indian occupied Kashmir so that the confidence of Kashmiri people could be restored in peace process. Speaking at a PTV programme, he said, it was also the equal responsibility of international community to take serious account of the existing human rights conditions in the IOK at a time when the process of Indo-Pak peace is moving in the right direction.
He said, according to analysts and observers, economically and politically, Asia would be the important region in the world during the 21st century.
It is imperative for India and Pakistan to settle their bilateral disputes, particularly the issue of Kashmir to ensure regional peace.
Some positive developments have taken place in the recent past, he said adding President General Pervez Musharraf has played appreciable role in this regard.
Some positive indications were also coming from the Indian side and situation was promising in the context that there is no tension between the two countries, he said.
He said the visit of APHC leaders from IOK to Azad Kashmir and Pakistan would help move towards a final solution of longstanding Kashmir dispute.
First time in history the Kashmiri leaders from both the sides have got an opportunity to assemble together, he said and added this would enable them to share the point of views and hopefully they would reach a consensus stance vis-a-vis given global conditions.
To a question, he said, peoples' pressure was gradually mounting on the governments of India and Pakistan for the settlement of bilateral disputes and it was under the impact of this pressure that change had occurred even in the attitude of Indian hawks.
He said economic activities both in India and Pakistan have gained momentum following the end of tension, adding once permanent peace is established the conditions would be much better.
