Prices of Turkish wheat and barley are expected to tumble in the coming weeks as the harvest of fresh crops has started in the main grain production regions, traders said on Thursday. Second-grade hard milling wheat sold for 35.17 kurus per kilo ($257.46 per tonne) on the Polatli exchange this week, compared with last week's 37.01 kurus last week.
The same grain sold for 34.81 kurus in Konya bourse, up from 31.53 kurus last week.
White barley was not traded in Polatli this week. It was traded for 25.36 kurus per kilo in Konya.
Current prices are not representative of underlying price levels, and prices should fall sharply in July as produce from central Turkey and Thrace starts coming to the markets, said Polatli exchange trader Ali Riza Ozdemir.
He said the new season crop sold for 25-27 kurus in Soke and 33-34 kurus in Adana.
Merchants are reluctant to buy because they are eyeing 400,000 tonnes of wheat Turkey will import from the European Union, Ozdemir said.
