Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) has contributed enormously in the field of cancer treatment and agriculture research. These observations were made by Governor Punjab Lieutenant General Khalid Maqbool (Retd) on the eve of foundation stone laying of first Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit at the premises of Inmol Cancer Hospital Lahore run by Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission.
The funds amounting to Rs 6.0 millions with follow up support for the building block for bone marrow transplantation unit have been donated by an England based Pakistani Anwar-ul-Haq who has dedicated this gesture to his wife Ms Muzamil Anwar who died of cancer.
He said that he was happy for having the honour of initiating proposal and follow up action for arranging funds amounting to Rs 600 millions from the central government for the installation of Linear Accelerator, two Gamma Ray Scanners and Histopathology labs to add to the diagnostic facilities of Inmol.
Governor Punjab urged Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission for its co-operation towards improving standards of education and research in the colleges and universities of Punjab province and asked for urgent action plan in this regard. He also announced that Baitul Maal would support the medical expenses for cancer and hepatitis patients, hundred from each district, on the recommendation of local authorities.
Speaking on the occasion the Chairman, Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, Parvez Butt said that commission is running 13 cancer hospitals in the country benefiting more than 350,000 patients annually. Six more such cancer hospitals are being built and will start functioning soon. He appreciated the support of governor of Punjab towards PAEC's agricultural research programme and other projects aimed at social economic development in the province of Punjab.
