The Punjab government has decided to observe the International Day Against Drug Abuse on Sunday (June 26) in a befitting manner by holding various programmes in a bid to create awareness among society against the menace of drug addiction. In a letter, the provincial government has directed heads of various departments to celebrate the day with zeal and zest.
They have been asked to make arrangements for holding walks against drug abuse. For holding walks, district governments, Tehsil municipal administration, police, social welfare organisations, sports bodies should also be involved.
The elected representatives including members of provincial and national assemblies could also be requested to participate in such walks.
The directive further said that banners, posters against narcotics and drug abuse should be displayed at all prominent places besides arranging seminars with the involvement of scholars, writers, religious scholars and journalists to highlight the cause of drug abuse and preventive measures against the menace.
The directive said it would be appreciated if dramatic performances were arranged on the day with collaboration of NGOs and local theatrical companies and cinema houses highlighting the harmful effects of use of narcotics.
The government has also asked the heads of departments to ensure participation of the press and electronic media in the events with the objective to make wide publicity and create awareness among the public in general and the youth in particular.
