Heavy downpour in the wee hours on Wednesday paralysed life in Sukkur, Rohri, Khairpur and several other adjoining towns of Upper Sindh. Most of the low lying areas in Sukkur and Rohri were flooded by rain which continued for more than four hours.
Water accumulated in these localities could not be drained out due to prolonged power breakdowns. Before the downpour started, stormy winds blew across these towns for more than two hours.
The wind storm speed was calculated at more than 100 km per hour. Dozens of trees, power and telephone lines and poles were uprooted, besides large number of bill boards.
Dozens of mud houses and dilapidated premises were reported collapsed in Sukkur Rohri and Khairpur. Reports from these towns said at least three persons were killed and several others injured as a result of roofs cave-in.
A tin roof was blown away by the windstorm in Abad Union Council area, which struck an 11000 KV power line, affecting power supply to more than half of Sukkur city. It was not restored till the filing of this news item. Hesco operational staff was reportedly making efforts to restore power supply.
Irrigation authorities said the rain had also raised water level in Sukkur Barrage area, and had increased water discharge to over 200,000 cusecs at upstream of the Barrage on 6:00 am on Wednesday.
Dark clouds were still hovered over the sky. Losses to dates, mango and cotton crops were reported from Khairpur, Ranipur, Ghotki and other adjoining towns.
Rain also exposed the tall claims of power break downs also affected the drinking water supply District Co-ordination Officer (DCO) Sukkur Shafig Ahmed Khoso told newsmen here, that all arrangements had been finalised for the security of Sukkur city and safety of people.
