A two-day "Re-vascularisation course in Pakistan - 2005 (RCP-2005)" will be held at the Liaquat National Hospital (LNH) here on August 20 and 21. The course is being held by the LNH Department of Cardiology in collaboration with Pakistan Cardiac Society, and supported by Pakistan Society of Interventional Cardiologist and Saarc Cardiac Society.
According to RCP-2005 Course Director Professor Mansoor Ahmad, Ischemic heart disease has attained an epidemic proportion in Pakistan and there is an emergent need for the clinician to understand its management and also be aware of the established and new modalities like angioplasty employed in its treatment.
The LNH Department of Cardiology is an Interventional Centre, which is in the forefront of management of cardiac disease. A large number of angioplasties are carried out every year and the success rate is comparable to any cardiac tertiary referral centre in the world.
The RCP-2005 is based on telecast of live cases, performed in the cardiac catheterisation laboratories to a select gathering of cardiologists, physicians and other doctors. Live case demonstration will be supported by discussion and lectures.
The coronary angioplasty and stenting are an established and safe way to treat coronary artery disease. This method of treatment entails opening up of narrowed or blocked arteries, supplying the heart through minimally invasive technique without bypass surgery.
The LNH Department of Cardiology is one of the pioneers in this discipline in Pakistan. This method of treatment of coronary artery disease is beneficial for the patient as it obviates the need of open-heart surgery in the majority of cases.
Through the RCP-2005, the Department of Cardiology would provide forum for broadcast of live cases from the Cath Lab to the select audience and also for dissemination of specialised information through lectures and discussions.
