The Higher Education Commission (HEC) would provide Rs 480 million to Comsats Institute of Information Technology to strengthen its Islamabad Campus.
It has approved a project to establish computer lab, engineering workshop, telecom engineering teaching lab, physics lab, electronics lab, meteorology teaching lab, architecture lab, multilingual lab and bio-Informatics lab in the institution, besides constructing an academic block, central library, workshop and other physical infrastructure.
It would also strengthen human resource development by providing 16 overseas scholarships to the faculty members.
The HEC wants to provide higher education facilities to 2,600 students in the institution and anticipate that the number would increase to 4,373 on completion of the project in 2008-09.
It would provide latest facilities to the students studying in information technology, engineering, management, economics, finance, basic, social sciences, and prepare them to take up challenging assignments.
The total enrolment at CIIT will increase to 4,123 as each year 900 students in the bachelors, 400 students in masters and 18-20 students would start graduating at the Ph.D. level.
The project will help in meeting the critically felt need for highly qualified personnel for domestic and international markets and would thus help in accelerating the formation and upgradation of human capital.
These trained professionals constitute critical components of the national knowledge infrastructure and would help in developing new ideas and businesses.
