Telecoms equipment giant Ericsson said on Tuesday it had signed an agreement to manage the mobile phone network of KPN's Belgian operator BASE. "Under the terms of the agreement, Ericsson will be responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the BASE core network for a period of 7 years," it said. BASE would be able to cut operating expenditure, Ericsson added in a statement.
Ericsson said it had announced 48 managed service contracts since 2002. Managing operators' networks is seen by Ericsson as one of its growth areas, along with supplying telecoms equipment.
One of its biggest contracts to date was a deal to manage the network of Italian operator 3, worth 15 billion Swedish crowns ($1.99 billion) over 5 years.
