Being the mass democratic parties, the PML-N and the PPP could not be kept out of the electoral process nor they would leave the field open for the non-democratic forces. Muhammad Pervaiz Malik, PML Central Secretary Finance and MNA expressed these views while talking to newsmen here on Friday.
Malik maintained that being the popular parties the PML-N and the PPP backed candidates would win with thumping majority in the local government elections despite rigging. "However, the widespread and unprecedented pre-poll rigging was a reflection to the government's fear that it would lose the election because of its wrong policies, which has put the country and the people into hardships," he added.
Answering a question, he said that the ARD was in a better position to decide about boycott of the polls after consultations with MMA in APC. He, however, said that seat-to-seat adjustments between the ARD and MMA backed candidates would produce positive results. The candidates' position as a result of this adjustment would become clearer, shortly before the polls, he added.
According to him, one thing was clear that the LB elections were being manipulated and not transparent. Wherever a government-backed candidate would win, he would carry a scar on his face of victory with rigging and misuse of government resources. Thus the present local government institution, which was invented by the sitting government, would further lose its credibility. The rigging record in the local government elections would also badly affect the efficacy and credibility of general elections 2007 and thus the democracy and political dispensation in the country would remain a dream.
To another question, he said that if ARD decided to resign from the assemblies, it would create more difficulties to the government.
The government and not the opposition parties have turned the elections a party process and questioned its non-party poll status.
