The Central Board of Revenue (CBR) has initiated an exercise to achieve transparency in postings of a number of officers in modern regional tax offices being set up all over the country. The posts in these offices carry double salary for the incumbents.
The CBR has sought views of senior officers in various field formations of the department that how the selection of officers for the new lucrative positions could be made transparent.
The exercise has been started in the light of complaints regarding the selection of certain officers for such postings in the past. Instead of selecting officers on merit the element of favouritism, personal liking and external pressures played a vital role for the postings.
In the past selection was made by a 3-membr committee, which interviewed candidates in different cities but never announced the results as well as the criteria of the selection.
Some of the recommendations made to the CBR suggested that selection for the double salary postings should be made on the basis of a written examination under supervision of an organisation like IBA, which can conduct test for the professional knowledge and skill of candidates.
A list of candidates based on merit should be created on the basis of performance in the examination and this should serve as the criteria for selection on the new posts.
The exercise has been initiated ahead of postings of a large number of income tax officers at 12 modern regional tax offices (RTO) being set up in the country.
