Senator Nisar A Memon on Wednesday emphasised the need of focusing on education to enable the country to make headway in the comity of nations. He was delivering a talk at the Arts Faculty of Karachi University. Nisar Memon, who is also the chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on defence and Defence Production, stressed that a merit-based society must be developed.
He pointed towards the progress that has been made by the country in the economy and said this growth must be sustained in order to achieve the target of poverty alleviation.
The Senator urged for strengthening institutions in the country to effectively providing better facilities to the people.
He said the present government was striving to provide the people basic facilities and its focus is on the provision of education, health and drinking water to the masses.
Nisar Memon asked for forging unity so that concerted efforts be made for the betterment of the country and its people.
He asked the students to inculcate the habit of thinking and undertake research work.
The Senator also called for coming up with think tanks at every level, especially at the seats of learning in the country.
He was of the view that our universities should help set forth the national agenda in accordance with our national requirements.
Regarding the foreign policy of Pakistan, Nisar Memon said in this respect the guiding principles were enunciated by Founder of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who pointed out that "our foreign policy is one of friendliness and goodwill towards the nations of the world. We do not cherish aggressive designs against any country or nation.... utmost contribution to the promotion of peace and prosperity among the nations of the world....upholding the principles of the United Nations Charter."
Nisar Memon pointed out that Pakistan under the leadership of President Pervez Musharraf has succeeded in avoiding confrontation during the past six years.
He said Pakistan is a responsible nuclear state and fostering friendliness and goodwill.
The Senator was also optimistic that the Kashmir issue would be resolved in a peaceful manner through dialogue process and in accordance with the wishes of the people of Kashmir.
He stated that the country's ties with India are also improving. He also referred to the India-Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project.
Nisar Memon also referred to the significance of the regional alliances such as Saarc, Shanghai Co-operation Organisation as well as the Asia-Middle East Dialogue.
He said media is also important as it educates and creates awareness among the masses.
The Senator was of the view that the country needs decency in politics, which should be free from the element of coercion.
Speaking on the occasion, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Karachi University, Professor Dr Ikhlaq Ahmed, said good governance is vital for the country.
He was of the view that the on-going local bodies polls would contribute towards strengthening of democracy in the country.
Professor Ahmed said there is a need for improving the social indicators through good governance.
Former vice-chancellor of Karachi University, Professor Dr Manzooruddin Ahmed, said the process of such an intellectual debate should continue. He was of the view that the universities were the battlegrounds for the ideas.
Assistant Professor of the Department of General History, University of Karachi, SM Taha presented the welcome address.
The lecture of Nisar Memon was followed by a question and answer session. The Dean of Karachi University's Faculty of Arts, Professor Dr Muhammad Shamsuddin, was also present on the occasion.
