Senate Chairman Muhammad Mian Soomro on Monday said that Pakistan and China were engaged in strengthening their co-operation at the regional level to meet the new challenges in the socio-economic sector.
The two sides had decided to actively cooperate in the regional organisations, like Shanghai Co-operation Organisation, Boao Economic Forum for Asia and Asean Regional Forum, he said in an interview with APP at the end of his two-day visit to China.
He said an important conference of Asia-Pacific countries would be held in Pakistan in November this year to further consolidate the regional partnership, particularly in the environment sector.
About his visit, he said it helped to push forward their co-operation and understanding on various issues of common interest.
Soomro, referring to his meeting with Wang Zhongyu, Executive Vice Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) held on Saturday, said they discussed their ongoing co-operation in various fields.
During the meeting, both sides reiterated commitment to further strengthen their all weather friendship, and also agreed to enhance bilateral exchanges at the level of the two Parliaments.
He said he also had a meeting with the officials of China State Engineering Construction Corporation and it was decided that the two sides would undertake joint ventures in building basic infrastructure for economic development. The Corporation also assured its financial and technical support for development of housing and road construction sectors.
To a question about Thar coal power project, Soomro said the two countries top leadership attached great importance to that project. The two sides are now negotiating the tariff structure for the sale of electricity, to be generated through this project.
He expressed his confidence that all related matters would be resolved amicably to undertake the project as soon as possible.
