Punjab Agriculture and irrigation departments have decided to launch a campaign with the assistance of local police to check water theft in rice growing areas, including Gujranwala, Sheikhupura and Hafizabad within next week.
Addressing a meeting of the Rice Working Group, Secretary Agriculture Fayyaz Bashir stressed the need for effective liaison between functionaries of the agriculture and irrigation departments in rice growing areas to ensure water availability at tail ends of the canals, which is vital input for rice production.
The meeting was attended by Director General Agriculture (Extension), Punjab, Chief Engineers of Irrigation, Lahore, Faisalabad and Sargodha.
Special Secretary Agricultural Marketing, district officers of agriculture of Rice Zone, representative of PCPA and progressive growers also attended the meeting.
