Microsoft said on Friday it had launched its first single chip for high definition television set top boxes for IP networks with Milpitas, California-based chip maker Sigma Designs.
The single chip which combines all key functions to receive TV signals over a broadband Internet network is available now, and makes it cheaper for network operators to reach volume production of high-definition capable set-top boxes.
IP television uses Internet protocols to deliver TV signals to homes over broadband Web connections.
IP TV is being embraced by dozens of telecoms providers around the world, as they aim to enter TV services to offset declining voice telephony revenues.
Microsoft said several customers for its IP TV product, such as BT, Swisscom AG and SBC Communications Inc, had welcomed the Sigma partnership.
Separately, major set-top box manufacturers Linksys-KiSS, Motorola Inc, Scientific-Atlanta Inc, Tatung Co and Thomson also confirmed support for the Microsoft TV platform by announcing a new range of products.
