Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat-ul-Ibad on Saturday directed authorities to make all local tanneries bound to discharge their effluent after proper treatment through effluent treatment plant, which was near completion in Korangi Industrial area in accordance with environmental requirements.
Presiding over a meeting at Governor House Karachi to review progress on the establishment of Korangi Effluent Treatment Plant (KETP), he assured that pending project of establishing KETP would be completed soon, for which finances were being provided by federal and provincial governments and owners of local tanneries.
He said the plant could be used for generating electricity after producing biogas from the plant besides the treated water for other industrial purposes.
Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) Chairman Gulzar Feroz informed the meeting that Korangi Effluent Treatment Plant - first of its nature in Pakistan and through it over 170 tanneries' waste water would be discharged into the sea after treatment.
He said the plant being established on 15 acres of land was costing Rs 500 millions which were jointly being provided by Federal and provincial governments and Tanners' Association.
Sindh Advisor on Environment and Alternate Energy Nauman Sehgal, Principal Secretary Saleem Khan, Secretary Environment Shamsul Haq Memon and owners of tanneries also attended the meeting.
Meanwhile, two different delegations including Pakistan Advertising Association led-by its president S H Hashmi and Pakistan Islamic Chamber of Commerce (PICC) led by its Secretary General Aqeel A Jasim along with UAE Consul General in Karachi Muhammad Abdullah Amir called on Sindh Governor.
They discussed several issues including investment opportunities, and law and order situation in Sindh.
The Governor said provincial government was emphasizing on residential facilities to low income groups and not only efforts were being made by the provincial government for starting low cost housing schemes but private sector was also being encouraged through lucrative incentives in this regard.
He informed the visiting delegations that several foreign investors were taking interest in these schemes, and incentives in housing sector, he assured adding that hurdles in the allotment of land being removed and rules were being simplified.
