Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has underlined the need to discuss all political issues in the parliament, which is the highest forum in the country, with a view to strengthening democracy and democratic institutions.
He was talking to National Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Amir Hussain, who called on him at the Prime Minister house here on Saturday.
He said politics of agitation and confrontation serves no useful purpose except disrupting normal public life and impeding the process of development.
The Prime Minister said government believes in politics of tolerance and accommodation and it would continue o strive for strengthening democratic values and traditions.
He urged parliamentarians to contribute substantially toward the process of legislation by taking active interest in the proceedings of the house.
The two leaders also discussed matters pertaining to the legislative agenda of the current session of the parliament.
The speaker informed the Prime Minister number of new laws and amendments in the existing laws passed by the parliament during the last one year (August 2004 to August 2005) stood at 23, which is a significant achievement.
The Prime Minister complimented the speaker on the progress made with regard to legislation and stressed the need for the parliamentary committees to play a pivotal role in the legislative process.
