Coffee sold under a code for so-called responsible production may rise to 35,000 tonnes in 2005 from 21,000 last year, the Dutch Utz Kapeh organisation said on Tuesday.
"I think this trend is continuing and we will see steady further growth," David Rosenberg, director of the non-governmental organisation, told Reuters during the Tea and Coffee World Cup trade fair in Hamburg.
Utz Kapeh certifies that coffee has been produced responsibly, respecting a code of social, environmental and economic conduct.
Workers must be protected by national laws on wages and working hours and have access to health care and education. Pesticides, fertiliser and other chemicals should be used moderately and employees must be properly trained, hygiene rules must be implemented and farms managed efficiently.
