China on Monday announced steady 2006 quotas for farm commodity imports subject to low tariffs as part of its agreements on joint the World Trade Organisation. The country would allow up to 9.636 million tonnes of wheat to enter at the low tariff rate in 2006, the National Development and Reform Commission said on Monday.
Ninety percent of that quota would be used by state-owned importers.
The corn import quota was set at 7.2 million tonnes, of which 60 percent was for state firms.
Any imports exceeding the quotas will attract higher tariffs, although China in recent years has imported little grain, apart from wheat.
