The Sindh government has sent medicines worth about Rs 2 million and tackled the issue of water contamination in Landhi on war-footing to provide relief to people suffering from gastro-enteritis and prevent occurrence of such incidents in future.
Sindh Health Minister Shabbir Qaimkhani and CM's Adviser on local government Waseem Akhtar on Wednesday spent about four hours in the areas affected by water contamination.
While regretting the loss of precious lives, he ordered the administration to take every care of the population without any let or hinderance.
Waseem Akhtar directed the TMO Landhi to immediately clean the sewerage lines and construct protective cover around them as a safeguard against problems of this nature in future.
He announced the laying of a new 4-inch pipeline to provide clean drinking water to the area residents. However, he cautioned them against illegal connections, and pointed out that tendency to have unauthorised connections through holes in the water mains, caused water contamination.
He said that under orders of Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan, Water Board officials will set up camps in the area to expedite regularisation of illegal connections.
The adviser held the area UC Nazim responsible for creation of problem and said that because of his alleged involvement in corruption, illegal connections were given which caused the crisis.
Health Minister Shabbir Qaimkhani instructed his department officials and staff to keep round the clock vigil and provide prompt medical aid to victims of contaminated water. He ordered laboratory testing of water samples.
DCO Karachi Fazlur Rehman and KW&SE chief Brigadier Iftikhar Haider were also present during the visit.
