Nearly 50 people, including students of Liaquat Medical University (LMU), were killed and over hundred injured some of them critically in two separate accidents on Indus Highway near Sehwan on Saturday night and early Sunday morning.
There are apprehensions that the death toll in the accidents could further increase keeping in view the number of critically injured brought to Sehwan and LMU hospitals.
So far 46 bodies had been brought to the Liaquat Hospital's city and Jamshoro branches of which 17 have been identified while six were burnt beyond recognition and an emergency have been imposed at Sehwan Hospital where most of the injured have been shifted.
The death toll in the first accident, at around 10 pm on Saturday between Liaquat Medical University point bus carrying around 50 students from Al-Razi hostel and a passenger coach coming from Sehwan, which was earlier reported to be around 20 rose to 42, including eight students.
The second incident took place at 3 am on Sunday when a passenger coach and Police Foundation bus collided head-on and immediately caught fire resulting in the death of 6 persons while 34 sustained injuries, some of them seriously.
A spokesman of National Police Foundation when contacted told Business Recorder that the coach was booked by Karachi-bound passengers from Sehwan and was carrying no passengers at the time of accident but two drivers in the bus died on spot while the cleaner was critically injured and was brought to Liaquat Hospital where he till filing of the report was in coma.
The spokesman contradicted the report published by a Sindhi daily; saying it had given the exaggerated figure of the casualties without confirmation, adding it was irresponsible reporting.
The hospital authorities said that 38 bodies have so far been brought to LMU city hospital and eight at Jamshoro branch but the confusion continues to prevail in hospitals as such that the number of casualties has not been confirmed however the authorities fear that the number might be more.
