The Aga Khan University Karachi held a health mela (festival) at its campus to observe World Heart Day on Sunday. The event included free blood pressure, sugar, cholesterol and height and weight check-up, followed by a public awareness seminar.
The seminar was addressed by the head of Cardiology Section Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH), Dr Khawar Kazmi, who said heart disease was a leading cause of death in Pakistan. Referring to World Health Organisation (WHO) report on heart attacks world wide, he said cardiovascular disease was responsible for 18 millions deaths around the world every year, of which around 80 percent occur in developing countries.
Dr Aamir Hameed, Senior Instructor and Consultant Cardiologist AKUH and Dr Saima Badruddin Professor and Consultant Nutritionist AKUH also spokes on the occasion.
