I am a resident of 9 A/1 3rd Sunset Street DHA Phase II Ext. ,Karachi . On September 8 , 2005 a notice under certain sections of the Electricity Act relating to theft of electricity was delivered to my above address. The notice mentioned that theft of electricity was being committed, as the meter pertainig to consumer No AL 902632 had been tampered with.
KESC had committed a blunder by delivering the notice at my address because my consumer No is not AL 902632. My consumer No is AL 997683. It is obvious that due to the callous attitude and gross negligence of the KESC staff, the notice meant for another residence in the neighbourhood, was delivered wrongly to me.
A written reply to the KESC Zonal Manager for Defence/Clifton was made vide their reciept No 5640, dated September 12, 2005. My reply also demanded an apology from the KESC. Subsequently I made three calls to the Zonal Manager to elicit an apology but without any success.
It is well known that KESC has been unable and/or unwilling to stop the theft of electricity and are able to generate billing of approx only 65 % of the electricty consumed. It is also well known that many a times the KESC staff themselves tamper with the meters and other equipment in connivance with the consumers in exchange for illegal gratifications to cause massive losses to KESC. The above incident shows the state of affairs in KESC have sunk to a new low.
Not only can the utility not stop corruption in its own ranks but it harrasses and causes anguish to its law abiding and honest consumers. It is these honest consumers who suffer even more financially, in the shape of high electricity rates, because of so much theft. If KESC cannot catch the thieves, can it please leave its honest consumers alone? In my case not even an apology is forthcoming. Have things become so pathetic at KESC that even an apology is too much to ask for? Will the MD KESC please take note?
