The government has planned to increase literacy rate from existing 51.6 percent to 88 percent by the year 2015 under National Action Plan, while enrolment in primary schools would be increased from 52 percent to 100 percent.
Federal Secretary Education, Sajid Hassan, stated this while addressing the inaugural session of a seminar held under the auspices of Punjab Literacy and Non-Formal Education Department and Japan International Co-operation Agency (Jica) here on Wednesday.
Punjab Secretary Literacy, Abid Saeed said that the government will set up 7,710 centres for adult education and 3,100 centres for non-formal education in the province during next three years, besides 1,000 more centres would be set up for women education in the southern Punjab. Presently, over 38 million people are illiterate (both adult and children) in the province which also include those who never got admission in the schools or dropped out soon after getting admission, he added.
Speaking on the occasion, Secretary Education, Punjab, Javed Aslam, said that literacy rate could be enhanced following checking of drop out ratio. The government has banned award of physical punishment to the students in the schools. The education reforms would help enhance literacy rate in the province, he added.
