Former federal minister and one-time a three-star general in the national army Abdul Majeed Malik has gone to the nation's highest court of appeals against the verdict of the Lahore High Court (LHC) that debars him from contesting the Nazim's office from his native Chakwal District.
Advocate of Record, Mehr Khan Malik, filed his appeal, saying that former law minister Abdul Hafeez Pirzada will appear for his client, Lieutenant General Majid Malik (Retd).
Through another petition, the lawyers have pointed out urgency of the situation and requested that the Supreme Court hear the appeal on Thursday. The elections to the slot are scheduled for Thursday.
Majeed Malik, who is Senior Vice President of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League, was ousted from the Chakwal District Nazim's elections by the District Returning Officer casting doubts on his matriculation certificate.
His appeal before a single bench of the Lahore High Court at Rawalpindi early this week rejected statements by senior officials of the Punjab University that the certificate conformed to their record and that the former general had passed his matriculation examination in 1939. The Punjab University conducted the high school examinations for several years until after the independence.
