The Alliance for Restoration of Democracy (ARD) has expressed dismay over the negative tricks of the ruling party and termed it height of poll rigging.
"Sheikh Rasheed is threatening the councillors through phones and police. We have recorded his voice and would release the tape for the media," said Aga Riaz-ul-Islam, senior leader of ARD here on Thursday while addressing a press conference. He threatened that if the government did not stop its negative tricks the united opposition would take drastic action against the ruling party people in Rawalpindi.
Aga rejected the claims made by Sh Rasheed about the support of 423 members for Rawal Town Nazim elections and said, "if Sh Rasheed proves this majority, we will withdraw our candidates."
He said: "The Pakistan Muslim League (N) and PPP have a clear majority of 467 in the house of 590." Aga Riaz, who is a central leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party, said: "There are no differences in ARD and all the components of the alliance are united." He said: "If we deem necessary there will be an unanimous candidate of the alliance in Rawal Town to defeat the touts."
He strongly condemned the rigging and use of government machinery and resources for Nazim elections. "They want to get favourable results, which will remain just a dream."
"Ministers are directly intervening and issuing orders to arrest the leaders of opposition parties to discourage them in the third phase of the local government election," he said. October 6, he said, "would prove fatal for Sh Rasheed as ARD would sweep the polls with clear majority," he added.
