Collectors asked to adopt new system for FED collection from telecom companies
The Central Board of Revenue (CBR) has issued instructions to collectors of sales tax to ensure collection of the federal excise duty (FED) from the telecommunication companies under the new procedure.
In this regard, the CBR has issued a directive to all the regional collectors on Saturday for proper implementation of the "Special Procedure for collection of the federal excise duty on telecommunication services."
According to the instructions, the collectors should keep in mind that the prepaid telecommunication services, including payphone cards used in public telephone booths, prepaid calling cards used on landline, prepaid cellular phone cards, and prepaid WLL cards and post-paid telecommunication like fixed landline phone.
The SRO 1004(I)/2005 of September 23, 2005 has brought about change in the date of payment of federal excise duty by the persons providing telecommunication services.
Under the new system, all prepaid telecom services have to pay excise duty by the 21st of the following month, and all post-paid telecom services by the 21st day of the following second month.
The collectors should ensure collection of the federal excise duty from the telecom sector under the new system, and report the collection figures on the 23rd day of every month.
