National Transport Ittehad (NTI) on Monday demanded of the government to redress their grievances pertaining to the unprecedented increase in fuel prices, otherwise transporters would not be able to carry on business in the month of holy Ramazan.
NTI Chairman Saleem Khan Bangash, in a statement, urged his comrades to make the Tuesday and Wednesday strike calls a success against the unbearable increase in petrol prices.
He said: "Any consequent increase in travelling fares is out of the question, as people are already facing hardships due to the recent inflationary trend and such a move will plunge transporters and passengers into a fray."
Dispelling any possibility of compromise with authorities, he said that wheel jam strike would go as per schedule.
Saleem Khan said increase by Rs 8.13, since May 8, 2005, in diesel prices had scaled up transporters' expenses beyond proportions.
He demanded that petrol and diesel prices should be revised down to Rs35 and Rs27 per liter, respectively.
