Administrative judge of anti-terrorism courts in Karachi on Friday sent a man, facing kidnapping and killing charges, to jail directing investigation officer to submit charge sheet against him on October 14, 2005.
Aurangzaib Brohi (25) was arrested by police on September 29, 2005 on charge of kidnapping cloth merchant Mehboob Ali (20), for ransom and later killing him in Soldier Bazaar area Karachi. Three co-accused, including a woman, in this case were still at large.
Police alleged that the accused after kidnapping Mehboob Ali on August 23 demanded Rs 4 million from his family members for his release. Later the ransom demand was reduced to Rs 500,000. The family of Mehboob gave Rs 485,000 to the captors but they killed Mehboob as the victim's family could not pay them Rs 5,00,000.
The throat-slit body of the victim was found lying in limits of Soldier Bazaar police station. The accused was produced before AJ Justice Khilji Arif Hussain of Sindh High Court. The AJ sending him to jail directed the police to submit charge sheet against him on next date of hearing.
Meanwhile, the AJ also extended the remand of another accused, facing kidnapping for ransom charges, till October 10. Mohammad Farooq is charged with kidnapping Mohammad Kamran, a goldsmith, and receiving 0.5 kilogram gold from him as ransom.
