A powerful earthquake measuring at least 7.6 on the Richter scale killed at least 237 people across India's occupied Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, a police spokesman said.
"In all 237 people have died and 600 others have been injured in today's earthquake," the spokesman said, adding the dead included 36 Indian occupation soldiers killed when their bunkers caved in or trees fell on their positions.
In all 192 people were killed in northern border districts of Baramulla and Kupwara, both bordering Pakistan's Azad Kashmir.
Seven people were killed in the occupied Srinagar, including an eight-month-old baby boy Musa Zargar.
The region's top civil servant Vijay Bakaya warned that the final toll could be much higher as reports came in from isolated areas.
Authorities reported at least 500 houses and buildings damaged in the quake, which had its epicentre across the Line of Control in Pakistan where more than 1,000 were feared dead.
"The occupation soldiers died along the Line of Control (LoC)," army spokesman P. Sehgal told AFP.
He said some of the army's forward posts caved in, while others were hit by falling trees and landslides. "There can be more casualties," he added.
Doctors at occupied Srinagar's main hospital alone said more than 250 people were admitted with injuries and shock.
The occupation army spokesman said more than 175 people were being treated at an army hospital in northern Uri town.
