The International Association of Cancer Registries (IACR) has conferred Associate Member (AM) status on the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Registry, an integral part of the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Center (SKMCHRC) Lahore Pakistan.
This is only the third Registry in Pakistan after Karachi Cancer Registry and the Aga Khan University-Pathology Based Registry, to be awarded an IACR membership. The Association, which was founded in 1966, has its head-office in Lyon France. It is a non-governmental organisation, which has been in official relations with the World Health Organisation since January 1979.
The Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Registry has, over the years, given an assessment of the magnitude of cancer amongst patients attending the Hospital. This has helped in planning the facilities required at the Hospital, evaluation of outcomes of treatments and initiating epidemiological research. The presence of Cancer Registry has also assisted in record keeping in a scientific manner.
