Karachi City District Government (CDGK) has chalked out an integrated emergency plan to replace the old infrastructure and construction of roads in industrial zones of Karachi.
"The work on the plan is about to start and would be carried out phase-wise", City Nazim Mustafa Kamal said in a meeting of Development Board of Federal ''B'' Area Industrial Area before leaving for Islamabad on Friday evening.
Under this development plan, to cost billions of rupees, at first there would be replacement and repairing of water and sewerage lines. Later, quality roads, along with footpaths, would be constructed, which would take the industrial areas of the city at par with the same in developed countries", the City Nazim said.
The development board for industrial area was established two years back under the chairmanship of City Nazim, but not a single meeting of this board was held.
After assuming the office of City Nazim, Mustafa Kamal directed to prepare a special development package for industrial zones of Karachi, besides efforts to resolve other major problems of the city.
In the first meeting of F B Area Development Board, the basic issues related to reconstruction and development of the area, repairing and rehabilitation of infrastructure and construction of roads came under review and immediate decisions were taken to resolve the problems of the area.
Gulberg Town Nazim Maood Ahmed Hayat, EDO Works & Services Sarfaraz Ali Shah, EDO Enterprise & Investment Promotion Raeesuddin Paracha, other officials of city government and representatives of business community of the area attended the meeting.
City Nazim said: "It is our desire that industrial areas of the city should be at par with such zones of developed world."
He assured the industrialists that all development works and projects would be undertaken by taking into confidence the board, the industrialists and traders.
He said that 65 percent contribution of Karachi in national exchequer meant that a major part of it is generated from these areas and development of these areas would be development of Pakistan as the revenue generated from here is utilised for progress of the country.
Describing the development of new industrial zones a positive step, the Nazim said that development, betterment and resolution of problems of industrial areas should be on priority.
"Keeping in view this perspective, we have devised the policy to carry out development of the four industrial areas of the city on emergency footings under special development program."
He said he would announce development program of F B Area Industrial zone within a week, like Korangi. All arrangements have been finalised and work on this program would commence within ten days.
Mustafa said that whatever the plan to be announced for development of city would not be just for the sake of photo session. "We do not believe in erecting plaques, but work practically."
"If the objective is to dig up the road only for erecting the plaque, then the whole city could be dug up in a week''s time," he added.
Karachi Nazim told the meeting that the City government was taking steps to promote investment in the country and there should be protection for invested capital.
"These said steps will not only protect the investment but would also help in persuading the investors to investment in Karachi, which would help generate employment," he added.
