The Punjab Chief Minister, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has directed the traffic police to launch a vigorous campaign to create awareness among public about the significance of traffic and road safety to ensure smooth flow of vehicular traffic across the province.
DIG, Traffic Police Punjab, Muhammad Altaf Qamar, told APP here on Sunday that "all over the world traffic reflects the discipline status of the nation. He said that IGP has placed an additional fund for public awareness campaign. He said that people especially drivers will be motivated through print and electronic media, seminars, quiz programmes to abide by the traffic rules in letter and spirit to avert road accidents which, he added, will help a lot to ensure uninterrupted flow of traffic.
He said that implementation of traffic rules will help in making the people disciplined. He said that all out efforts will be made to inculcate the spirit of discipline and responsibility among the road users to make travelling safe and comfortable. With paramount emphasis, awareness among road users will be created to follow traffic rules and exercise road sense to avoid non-fatal and fatal accidents, he added.
Initially 8 special mobile teams of traffic police comprising Mobile Motor Police Inspectors under the supervision of 4 special squads each headed by a DSP Traffic have been constituted in provincial metropolis to help regulate and control the traffic besides imposing fine on the spot for traffic violation in the town, he said.
He said that IGP is personally holding weekly meetings to review the measures being taken from time to time to rid of the ever increasing traffic hazards and obstructions to fully ensure uninterrupted smooth flow of traffic besides crackdown against corruption.
Muhammad Altaf Qamar said that " we can control and fully ensure the smooth flow of cent per cent vehicular traffic on all highways and city roads if we exhibit a patience of only 15 seconds and allow others to go ahead first". He said several developed countries having hundred times more traffic than Pakistan always regulate and manage their traffic by strictly implementing traffic rules in letter and spirit and their citizens extend courtesy to other drivers to move firsts.
