The NWFP Minister for Environment and Forests, Shah Raza Khan, has said that due to non-availability of gas in Malakand and Hazara divisions, precious wood worth Rs 1400 is being burnt for cooking ten cups of tea, which is misuse of national resources besides causing environmental pollution.
So, gas should be supplied to these areas on priority basis, as it would also put an end to the random cutting down of precious forests.
He made this proposal while talking to Federal Minister for Environment Tahir Iqbal in the latter's office in Islamabad the other day. MNA Bakhtiar Muani was also with the provincial minister.
The Federal Minister, while agreeing to the demand, said that the Federal Government would ensure all possible assistance in this regard.
Raza said that environmental pollution was increasing in River Swat in Malakand, River Panchkora in Dir and River Kunhar in Hazara day by day due to hotels on the banks of these rivers and other anti-human attitudes. For prompt stoppage there should be preplanning for this purpose.
The Federal Minister promised to start a joint project for protecting these rivers from increasing pollution which would be started soon.
Both the Federal minister and Provincial minister agreed to review and examine damage and catastrophe in forests in the earthquake devastated areas and for starting a project for tree plantation in these areas.
